Fitting in Fitness

by Mindi Stavish on March 15, 2012

As my breast-feeding adventures are close to ending, I have started thinking about getting back into an exercise routine.  I’m fortunate to have a super-than-human metabolism while breastfeeding and shed all my baby weight just by nursing, all while eating anything I please.   Once I stop nursing, all bets are off though.  And let’s face it I’m tired of not having any sort of muscle tone, especially with the impending doom of tank top and swim suit weather lurking. I’m hoping Noah starts to sleep through the night (PLEASE), so I can perhaps attempt to wake up early to work out.  I am not a morning person so this should be interesting.  Before kids I loved working out at the gym and hitting up the cardio classes.  Now my idea of “working out” is carrying both boys up and down the stairs or running after them at the playground.

While on maternity leave with Xander, I tried Stroller Strides and loved it. Once I went back to work, I couldn’t fit it into my schedule.  Since moving, the closest  Stroller Strides is 40 minutes away so that’s not even an option. One of the ways I am going to try to fit fitness in my schedule is to include the boys.  I have always heard about Yoga for babies but never tried it. There have been studies proving Yoga can help children with ADHD focus better, so it can help my toddler when he becomes unglued, right?  Over the next months, I will be featuring a guest post or two about this topic, along with my journey into becoming a more fit mom post two-babies.  On top of trying yoga with Xander, I’m going to start the Beach Body Insanity program.  I’m sure it will kick my ass in more ways than one, but it’s about time mama got her fit on.

How do you squeeze in fitness time into your routine as a mom? Stay tuned to see how I manage.

I think when they’re really young it is really hard to fit in fitness time.  Small increments of time would be the best way I suppose – 10 minutes here, 10 minutes there?

Great suggestions!  I guess 10 minutes here and there adds up.

Oh honey,

I’m with you. Gotta have a great hubby, or support system. Crazy to think I still need to find some time to work out with all the “boy running around” I do. Best of luck to you!

Hey Mindi,  Try planks while down on the floor playing with the kids, and baby lifts and squats a couple times a day - work great because the little muchkins just keep adding a on weight.   Try also doing few yoga poses with the kids around.  My two just love to copy what I am doing – it only lasts a few minutes but the minutes add up.

Thanks for the great suggestions.  I forgot about planks…such torture but they work so well.

I’d love to hear if you try Yoga with the kids.  I used to wake up before my kids were up to exercise.  Then I’d run with them in a jogger stroller and then we joined a family club where they’d going to the kids club and I’d take Yoga or Pilates.  Now that all my kids are in school and I SHOULD have all the time in the world to exercise, I work and I don’t make time to exercise.  SHAME on me.

It’s on my agenda for Saturday morning.  I’m looking forward to seeing how my oldest takes to it.  I got a couple of cute yoga kid videos.  Yeah I thought about joining a gym with a kids club but they are pretty costly around here.  Plus I already don’t get enough time with them during the week.  I should start running because I have a jogging stroller.  Thought about starting the couch to  5k with the jogger, especially now that it’s warmer.
