If your like me you love a great deal and bath and beauty products that you can feel good about putting on your kids skin. I can’t even tell you how many hours I have spent on the Skin Deep database searching for safe beauty products to use with my boys. EWG’s Skin Deep database is an online safety guide for cosmetics and personal care products. The database provides easy-to-navigate color and number coded safety ratings for personal care products. The more I searched the database the more frustrated I became with the products that are marketed as “all natural” and “green”. Many of these products still contain unsafe ingredients. Did you know…
* “Hypoallergenic” products are not always a safer choice for children, just because it’s hypoallergenic. Many marketing claims are unregulated and companies are rarely required to back up their packaging claims.
An investigation of more than 1,700 children’s body care products found that 81 percent of those marked “gentle” or “hypoallergenic” contained allergens or skin and eye irritants (EWG 2007a).(Skin Deep)
* Natural and organic products are not always safer. These products may contain synthetic chemicals or natural/organic ingredients that are not necessarily risk-free.
* Federal law does not require companies to list all ingredients, including nanomaterials, ingredients considered trade secrets and components of fragrance (Houilihan 2008). Believe it or not the term “fragrance” may include any of the 3,163 chemicals and none of these are required to be listed! Scary stuff!
Now I will admit not all of my bath and beauty products have the lowest rating on the Skin Deep database, but all of the boys products do. Whenever I come across a new product for Xander and Noah a quick search tells me just how safe the product is. When a friend told me about Jessica Alba’s Honest company, I was happy to find their products received safe rating scores on the database. Not to mention their packaging is adorable!
