I have a confession to make. I love pretty paper. There is nothing like receiving a handwritten letter in the mail. A handwritten letter on pretty stationary or a gorgeous card is even better. Wouldn’t you agree?
The first summer my husband and I dated we were living in two different states. Every few days, I received a letter from him in the mail. The letter would typically be written on small cards that had drawings of cats on them. He would also spray his cologne on the envelope, which made my heart turn to butter every time. I remember how happy I would be when a letter arrived. The anticipation of reading his words was like Christmas morning. The familiarity of the shape of the card, the colors, the various cats on the front, and the look of his handwriting pushed me through the long summer we spent apart.
I saved every one of these letters and recently found them when I was putting together his gift for our 9th wedding anniversary. As soon as I pulled the first card out of it’s envelope, I was flooded with memories from the summer we fell in love. It is hard to believe just how the look and feel of a piece of paper can be so powerful.
I sometimes wonder what our summer romance would have been like if we were college students now. Would we still write letters back and forth? Or would we rely on e-mail, Facebook and Skype to communicate with each other? Don’t get me wrong, I love all of the ways we can keep in touch with loved ones in an instant, but there is something to be said for the written word, something we can feel, smell and cherish for years to come.
Sadly, these days it seems the only time I really send people cards or letters are for special occasions, such as birthdays, holidays and thank you notes. This really needs to change! I am pledging to myself that I will make more of an effort to send my friends and family members handwritten letters, to show them that I’m thinking about them. Sending a letter is such an easy way to bring a smile to a special person’s face when they open their mailbox and receive something other than junk mail or a bill.

I am excited to be partnering with Minted, an online global community of graphic designers and online store, to offer you a wonderful giveaway so you can be inspired to send a beautiful thank you card, letter, holiday card, birth announcement or party invitation.

I would want to write it to br from my future self…like to look have an answer from futrue self, assurance that i will be okay, that all did work out and my worst thoughts did not come true. To be told…just keep going, cause you will be satisfied in the end with how it all turned out.
What a wonderful idea!!! I love it! I probably would write a letter to my kids in the future too. Like when I pass on, as depressing as it is. Thoughts to them that they will get through any rough patch with a bit of hard work and a lot of love.

I sadly never read any of her books. May have to read some now as an adult. Great choice.

I would love to write a letter to my grandmother. She passed away when I was about 10 and now I’m almost 30 with a child and wonder what she thinks of my kid, etc.

So sorry to hear of your grandmother’s passing when you were so young. My grandmother passed away when I was in third grade. I too wonder the same things you do. I would love it if she were still around.

The scrapbook idea sounds great. It would be wonderful for your girls to have that as they get older too. Glad to hear you are going to start writing to him again. I’m sure he would love it.

Oh I’m with you, I adore handwritten letters and card… I used to do them all the time BK (before kids!) Now we send art work turned into cards with a few quick words scribbled in them… I NEED MORE TIME!

I love minted! They have some of the cutest designs. When my husband and I were in high school we used to write notes to each other and we kept all of them. I can’t remember the last time we read them or if we even have read them again! I’ll need to get on that!

That’s so sweet!!! Yes you should dig them out. It’s a lot of fun to read old letters. I can’t believe how sappy we use to be. Made me sort of miss those first few years of falling in love.

Oh and if I could write a letter to anyone it would be to a couple people very close in my life who’s lives were ended way too soon.

i would love to write to my grandmother who passed away 16 years ago. i used to love talking to her all the time and would just love to get a letter from her.
it’s sad that not many people write letters now. yes, email, facebook and skype is great, but the suspense and excitement of getting a letter is gone since you can instantly “see” or hear from anyone quickly through skype, email etc.. it may still be nice to do this now, but the excitement is not as great.:( bring letter writing back i say!:)
yay for bringing letters back. I’m so sorry to hear about your grandmother. I miss both of my grandmothers and wonder what they would think of my kids. and would be so nice to talk to them now that i’m grown.
