Review

In honor of my learn how to knit series, I would like to share with you the beautiful Christmas stocking patterns written by Judith Tollefson. Judy hails from my home state of Maine and has many passions including calligraphy, graphic design, kitchen design, garden design, sewing, knitting and needlepoint. She has taught calligraphy, knitting and needlepoint courses.

Years ago Judy designed her house and many of the materials that were used to build the house were from her grandparent’s barn, that she used to play in as a child. Her house is now situated on the land her grandparents bought back in the 1920′s. How very special is that?

After moving into her house, she decided she needed the perfect Christmas stocking to display during the holidays. When she couldn’t find the “perfect one”, she decided to design her own. After much ripping, tearing, and brainstorming, she finally came up with two patterns that she was relatively happy with and displayed them for the season.

Following Christmas, she made adjustments to the stockings and decided to launch her Christmas Stocking Collection. A year later, she showed her 2007 Christmas Stocking Collection.  Two years after that her designs appeared in the Christmas Edition of Vogue Knitting, which is big stuff in the knitting world.

I had the pleasure of reviewing one of Judy’s Christmas Stocking Kits, which includes a pattern and all of the yarn to complete the project. Judy’s Christmas Stocking Kits range from classic Christmas red and green colors with snowflakes and trees to elegant white and green motifs. With so many beautiful choices, I had a difficult time narrowing it down. I finally decided on the distinct Cars and Trucks pattern, for Xander.

Each pattern is written easily and will be a breeze for knitters who are comfortable with Fair Isle (stranded color work) and knitting in the round. If you are new to knitting, this kit would be a great goal for you to aim to achieve. The second year I learned to knit, I set out a goal to learn Fair Isle, took a private lesson, and knit my first color work hat.  I am now addicted to the beauty of color work patterns.

The Cars and Truck pattern took me a little over a month and a half to complete and I love how it came out. Is it perfect? No. I have several mistakes in the color work, because I was either tired or just not paying attention. Lucky for me, most of the errors are on one entire side, so I will be displaying the nearly error free side.

Judy sells her Christmas Stocking and  Mitten Patterns, as well as Stocking and Mitten Kits. Please visit her shop to ogle over her amazing designs. You can find Judy on  Facebook at Judy’s Colors or sign up for her monthly newsletter.

A Long Awaited Reunion with My Brother

by Mindi Stavish on October 17, 2012

Last month while on vacation in Maine, I finally met my 4 month old niece and spent some much needed time with my little brother, Zack. The last time I saw him neither one of us had children. Yes, it has been that long!

Growing up we were pretty close, even though there was a 4 year age gap between us. We dealt with a lot of garbage growing up in the housing projects, with a depressed mom. Both of us survived our childhood relatively unscathed though. Sadly enough, a few years after I left for college (out-of-state) Zack and I lost touch. I always wondered how he was doing and hoped he was well. I can’t even recall how I finally got my hands on his phone number, a few years ago. I remember how happy and nervous I was when we spoke for the first time, after not speaking for many years.

Since then, we have remained in touch through text, the occasional phone call, and Facebook. Last summer when we were in New England, I was hoping to get together with him, so he could meet the boys but it didn’t work out. Finally this fall we were reunited and I witnessed my baby brother holding his baby. I get chills up my spine just thinking about it. My baby brother, the one who I built blanket forts with. My baby brother, the annoying pest who just wouldn’t leave me alone when I was a moody teenager. My baby brother, who looked like a pro holding his daughter.  My baby brother, who beamed with happiness as he gave his sweet baby a kiss.

Our short visit was by far one of my favorite moments in our week long trip. I finally met my brother’s girlfriend, Tellis, who was just as sweet as I imagined through my encounters with her on Facebook. I loved watching Zack meet his nephews. It was more special than these photos show. But really how does one express such emotions of happiness with a photo?

I loved holding my niece, Nola Autumn, for the very first time. She is so precious. Even cousin Noah thought so!

I loved watching my husband hold my niece.  It reminded me of watching him cradle Noah and Xander in his arms, when they were that small.  Such fleeting moments I wish I could bottle up forever.  I loved that two of my favorite people were in the same room, spending time together with our children.

After we enjoyed lunch together the kids decided to crash.  Ah, a joyful sight to see, the vacation nap. Noah is the only one who was not sleeping, no surprise there.

The afternoon passed by much too quickly and before we knew it we were saying our goodbyes. I wish nothing but happiness for my brother. He is an amazing dad and person. I can’t wait to watch him grow as a parent. As we left, I vowed to him that we can’t let another five or more years go by until we see each other again. These kids just grow too fast!  Before we know it these kids of ours will have children of their own.  It’s so exciting to think about who they will become.  The sky is the limit for them.

I’m so thankful for the time I spent with my brother and his family and I can’t wait to see them again.

Taste of Home: Maine Lobster Feast

July 7, 2012 Holidays

The one thing I really miss about living in New England is the fresh seafood, especially the lobster. Since we aren’t traveling to New England this summer, we decided to bring the lobster dinner to us to celebrate July 4th. The last time we had lobster at home was in 2010. Xander was just a [...]
